Diamond Carat (ct.)
One of the most important characteristics that determine a diamond’s value is its weight – the diamond’s carat. And as a starting point, a diamond is more valuable the bigger it is.
Karat vs. diamond carat
The weight of a diamond is measured in carats, and must not be confused with carat, which is the designation for the purity of gold. Carat Weight (CT) is the metric unit to measure the mass of diamonds. This unit of measurement was derived from early gem traders using carob seeds as their counterweights. The standard equivalent of 1 carat is 0.2 grams or 100 points. In general, as the weight of the diamond increase, the value will increase exponentially due to its rarity and desirability.

The diamond's carat can be calculated using a formula
A diamond’s dimensions determine its weight. The carat weight of a well-proportioned round brilliant can be calculated with a special formula – this is accurate for 95% of round brilliants.
Generally, however, the carat is measured with a delicate diamond scale. The carat of the diamond is always indicated to two decimal places.
